player selection process
I) Selection Guidelines for Media.
A. Committee Members
1) The selection committee of the Kansas Shrine Bowl consists of prep writers at most daily newspapers, and selected
professionals at large weekly newspapers, and selected radio and TV stations. Ballots will only be available online.
B. Selection Guidelines
1) Only players on the nomination list accumulated by the Shrine Bowl Office from coaches' nominations will be eligible.
2) Committee members must vote for 26 players (by position).
(1) 11 offensive players (your opinion of the best offensive players in the state regardless of their school size)
(2) 11 defensive players (your opinion of the best defensive players in the state regardless of their school size)
(3) 3 additional all-purpose players at any position
(4) 1 specialty player (kicker/punter only)
(5) Valid ballots should include at least one - 8-man player (offense or defense).
(6) There may be up to 2 players selected from the same school, with a maximum of 2 schools receiving multiple player votes.
(7) There are no geographic restrictions, but if all else is equal, strive to obtain diverse geographic distribution across Kansas. Ballots with an obvious regional or local bias will be disqualified.
3) Partial ballots may be considered in the count if no regional or local bias is evident.
4) Valid votes can be for any nominated player on the east or west side. A player's selection is the result of the total number of votes, regardless from where the votes came from. The media selected team will consist of the 11 top offensive vote getters on each side of our east-west dividing line (the line created by the eastern boundaries of the following counties: Washington, Riley, Geary, Morris, Chase, Greenwood, Elk, and Chautauqua), the 11 top defensive vote getters on each side of our east-west dividing line, 3 additional top vote getters regardless of position and the top vote getter at the Specialty position. The media is expected to vote for players on both sides.
5) To be in the tally, ballots must be completed and received via the online form by 12:00 p.m. CST on Monday, December 6, 2022.
6) Valid ballots will be totaled by the Shrine Bowl Office, subject to official audit.
7) A special sub-committee consisting of statewide sports media experts will be invited to break ties and validate vote totals to determine the top 26 for each squad with consideration for both Head Coach’s positional needs.
8) A statewide Player Selection Show, featuring the selected players, will be released on Saturday, January 1, 2022 at 11:00 am at www.KansasShrineBowl.com. An official news release will be provided to all participating media members as well following the Player Selection Show.
II) Selection Guidelines for Shrine Bowl Assistant Coaches.
A. Assistant coaches will select 2 players on each squad.
1) Players must be on the nomination lists.
2) Only one player per school is eligible for coach selections (this player must be from a school from which the media has
not already selected a player).
3) Players selected must be from the coach’s own school size classification on their side of the state. Both selections should
be the best players from their size classification, not already selected by the media with consideration for the needs of the
team. Better, more qualified players should not be by-passed in favor of a coach’s own team player but certainly their
own nominated players are eligible to be selected in this policy.
B. Assistant coaches will be responsible to help the head coach select needed replacement players by team need, from the list of
nominated players.
III) Selection Guidelines for Shrine Bowl Head Coaches.
A. Head coaches will select 2 players on each squad.
1) The Head Coach should analyze the media selections and advise the assistant coaches immediately of the team needs by
position, so they may help fill the needs as they make their selections.
2) Players selected must be on the nomination lists.
3) The Head Coach may select a single player from a school that has already be represented. The Head Coaches second
must come from school not yet represented.
4) The Head Coach’s selections may be from any school size classification.
